Frequently Asked Questions

Philosophy and what you can expect

In our first session I’ll ask you to tell me about yourself, your background, and what brings you to therapy, we will also do a brief review of your history. You will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss your goals. It’s very normal to be nervous about therapy, especially if you haven’t been before. My job is to help you feel at ease and encourage you that you made it through the door.

As your counselor, I will be working to build trust and understand your story as we start the therapy process so that I can better know what makes you the person that you are, along with what your particular needs may be. This can take time, and I want to help you practically discern what works well for you and maybe what doesn’t as we tackle the challenges you face. I will be present for you to process what you are comfortable sharing and desire to work on, learn how that impacts you today, and walk with you towards growth and change. Sport and life carry unique intricacies in how they function together, exploring those dynamics and how they interact in your daily functioning will be a part of this process as well if you are an athlete or function in a sport environment. This process will be specific and unique to you and your needs, I’m excited to walk alongside you through it.

I work from a combination of different theoretical modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotive behavioral therapy, and narrative therapy perspectives while drawing from dialectical behavioral therapy and mindfulness acceptance/commitment therapy toolsets. I also use person-centered and strengths-based techniques in my practice as well.

How long can you expect to be in therapy? A national research study found that 50 percent of psychotherapy clients had made improvement within eight sessions of therapy, and 75 percent showed improvement after six months of therapy, and some choose to remain in therapy for years. Of course, showing improvement is not the same as successfully completing treatment. Not everyone needs therapy, some individuals do need it, but anyone can benefit from it in striving for self-improvement, cognitive growth, and depth in knowing oneself. Most therapists will tell you that the length of treatment depends upon the nature of the problem, the severity of the issue, and the treatment goals selected. Your work is unique to you.

Financial hardship should never be a reason you can’t get help in addressing your mental health needs. If I’m not the best fit I am happy to provide referrals for other counselors who can help address your specific needs.

All phone calls for scheduling or initial consultations are free of cost. Any further case management phone contact or crisis support phone contact will be prorated by my hourly fee. All payment is due at the time of treatment unless otherwise agreed upon.

Cancellations

All appointments must be cancelled 24 hours in advance, with exceptions made for medical illness or emergencies. If an appointment is missed without 24 hour notification, you will be billed for the full hourly fee.

Insurance

I am an out-of-network provider, however, I can provide you with a detailed invoice for treatment that can be provided to your insurance company if they provide out-of-network reimbursement.

Adolescents

Parents, it is incredibly important that I build rapport with your teen. This means I need to be able to gain their trust. For this reason, I try to maintain a no secrets policy in which anything you tell me, I highly encourage you to have already discussed your child prior. I understand that you have a different perspective of your child than I have, however I ask that you keep this information open between us. In return, I have to keep confidential what your child says during therapy and with your teens permission, if necessary I will report back to you major themes, progress, etc. I will also always report any immediate danger, or concern if it so arises. Please know that I always see and value our work together as a team in your teens health and development.

Not an Athlete? No problem.

I regularly work with non-athlete and former athlete clients who face similar stressors and problems in their life.
